Dinosaurs Collection - 1oz Silver Triceratops Coin | New Zealand Mint

**MINTAGE SOLD OUT**

Dinosaurs - Triceratops 1oz Silver Coin

The second dinosaur coin to feature in our exciting new Dinosaur Collection struck in 1oz pure silver is the tremendous Triceratops. Its name is a combination of the Greek words tri, meaning "three," kéras, meaning "horn," and ops, meaning "face". Triceratops had two massive horns above its eyes and a smaller horn on its snout. It is likely that it used them to charge predators and/or in mating rituals.

This imposing dinosaur roamed North America about 67 million to 65 million years ago, during the end of the Cretaceous Period. Fossil evidence shows that Triceratops was about 30 feet (9 meters) long and 10 feet (3 meters) tall and weighed 4 to 6 tons.

Despite its tremendous size, Triceratops was an herbivore and, like a modern-day rhinoceros, probably spent much of its time grazing on plant matter. Its beak-like mouth was best suited for grasping and plucking rather than biting,

This coin has been antiqued to complement the design and shows a dramatic, coloured representation of a Triceratops confronted by two skilfully engraved raptors in a prehistoric background. The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the coin is legal tender in Niue.

The coin is placed in a robust coin case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. A themed outer box also displays an image of this splendid dinosaur. With a limited mintage of only 2,000 coins you’ll want to grab one before they also go extinct. It will make a fabulous addition to any Dinosaur or coin collection!
