Gandalf the Grey is the second to feature in our new THE LORD OF THE RINGS™ Classic Coin Collection. Despite his humble appearance as an elderly man in a grey cloak and drooping hat, Gandalf is one of the most powerful wizards on Middle-earth. Gandalf’s knowledge and power is second only to his fellow wizard Saruman the White. Although Gandalf is less arrogant than Saruman and takes a keen interest and joy in the goings-on of humble folk such as Hobbits. Indeed, he often went to the Shire for respite from errands. His attachment was likely because the Shire was more peaceful than other inhabited realms of Middle-earth. He plays the role of mentor to the Hobbits Bilbo and Frodo, who contrary to their original impressions of Gandalf as a wandering magician, come to realize that the Grey Wizard is a wise sage and mighty warrior.
Each one arrives in a quality coin case, ideal for display, which is placed inside a themed box. A Certificate of Authenticity is included with the coin’s unique serial number and to provide a guarantee of the pure quality of the silver or gold.
One side of the 1oz silver coin shows a detailed engraving of the Shire, with the powerful wizard in colour in the foreground. The ¼oz gold coin has a clean, close-up view of Gandalf holding his staff. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II effigy graces the opposite side of both coins and guarantees them as legal tender. The silver coin has a limited mintage of 3,000 coins while the gold is restricted to only 250! A precious collectible indeed.
